Oxygen from Romans 15 (Precipice)

We who are strong in faith must be considerate of those who are sensitive about (their traditions). We must not just please ourselves.  We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.” Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(Romans 15:1-6)

Lord:

Our loves are so often solitary desires,

pleasing self and mine our truest passion;

pleasing others is not our fashion.

Christian harmony is hard to come by

for so many solitary loves intrude

upon what should be the single-minded focus

of your redeemed -- the love of Christ

and obedience to His Word.    (John 14:21)

But for many who love church traditions

Your truth often takes second place;

the franchise thinks that Christians need

the ritual, funny clothes and liturgy,

connecting to some ancient sophist,

when it's really Christ they need

and the comfort of His promises,

mediated through no human institution,

but by Word and Spirit in hearts ablaze

authentic prayer and praise shall raise.

Help us learn to give You glory,

not as Catholic or Protestant,

but as blood-bought sinners transcending

every human rite and regulation,

lifting eyes from dusty books

to feel our worship taking soul root,

to make such prayers as ring in heaven,

joining in the Savior's chorus:

God is for us! God is for us!   (Romans 8:31)

How may we please You, Savior, Friend,

You, who gave Your all for us,

You, who endured the pains of hell,

that we might turn, choose life and live?  

You nothing ask that you do not give.

Lead us back from the precipice

of our dark and craven nature,

that put on firmer footing we may run

toward the lights of home and heaven.
